Understand What Causes It

Burn-in happens when specific pixels display the same static content for extended periods, causing those pixels to age and dim slightly faster than the surrounding pixels that showed varying content. Over a long enough timeline, this uneven aging becomes visible as a faint retained image, most noticeable in bright, uniform backgrounds like a blank web page or a loading screen.

The key word is “static.” Content that constantly changes — actual gameplay, videos, most everyday browsing — poses far less risk than fixed elements like a permanent HUD element, a taskbar left visible for hours, or a paused screen left up overnight.

Use Built-In Protection Features

Nearly all modern OLED gaming monitors include several automatic protective measures — check your monitor’s on-screen menu to confirm they’re enabled:

  • Pixel shifting: subtly and imperceptibly shifts the entire image by a few pixels at intervals, so static elements don’t sit on the exact same pixels for too long.

The habits worth actually adopting are turning down unnecessary brightness for static content, avoiding leaving the screen paused and unattended for long stretches, and letting the monitor’s automatic maintenance cycles do their job.
