Sony’s newer PS5 models changed which accessories you need. The PS5 Pro and the Digital Edition Slim ship without a disc drive, and the newer consoles ship without a vertical stand in the box. This guide covers the official accessories worth knowing about.
PlayStation Pulse Elite wireless headset
The PlayStation Pulse Elite wireless headset uses Sony’s PlayStation Link connection, which is designed for low latency on PS5 and the PlayStation Portal. It also supports Bluetooth for your phone. It is the simplest headset choice if you play on PS5 and own a Portal.
PlayStation Pulse Explore wireless earbuds
The PlayStation Pulse Explore wireless earbuds offer the same PlayStation Link connection in an earbud design. They suit Portal players and anyone who doesn’t want a headset on for long sessions.
PS5 Disc Drive
The PlayStation 5 Disc Drive attaches to the PS5 Slim Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro. If you have a collection of PS4 or PS5 discs, or you want to buy games second-hand, you need it. Note that the drive is paired to the console online the first time you use it.
Vertical stand
The PS5 vertical stand lets you stand newer PS5 consoles upright. Newer consoles don’t include one in the box, and standing the console without it isn’t stable. Make sure the stand you buy fits your model: the original PS5 and the newer Slim and Pro use different stands.
Also worth considering
- Storage: an M.2 SSD with a heatsink, such as the WD_BLACK SN850P for PS5, expands storage. Check Sony’s size and speed requirements before buying.
- Controller charging: a PlayStation DualSense charging station keeps two controllers ready.
Bottom line
Buy a disc drive only if you use discs, and a stand if you want the console vertical. For audio, PlayStation Link headsets make the most sense if you also own a PlayStation Portal.
